Petrichor is the pleasant, earthy scent produced when rain falls on dry soil, caused by the release of compounds like geosmin (a bacterial byproduct) and plant oils. Coined in 1964 by researchers, the term comes from Greek petra (stone) and ichor (divine fluid). It is described as a fresh, musky, or "concrete-like" aroma to which humans are highly sensitive.
